One-page 8 x 9 ¾, ALS, Albany, March 17, 1813, by HORATIO GATES SPAFFORD SR. (1778-1832) to former Vice President Aaron Burr.  Spafford published the Gazetteer of New York in 1813. He was an inventor, author, editor, entrepreneur and a correspondent of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison and other notable Americans. In this letter he urges Burr to provide his promised aid in submitting a description of New York “with its fortifications” for inclusion in his work, The Gazetteer of New York.  Spafford’s son was best known for writing the Christian hymn, “It Is Well With My Soul,” following the Great Chicago Fire and the deaths of his four daughters on a transatlantic voyage.

Many historians believe that the fortifications constructed to protect New York’s harbor was a major reason why the British never attacked. The War of 1812 ended on February 18, 1815, two years after this letter was written.

In part: "Does my Hon'd friend Col. Burr know that I am still waiting for his description of New York, with its fortifications, &c.? Or has he forgotten it, in a press of other, & more important business? Such is the present progress of my work, that I shall very much need that within 1 or 2 weeks at most. Should it not, therefore, be in thy power to send it to me, please advise me immediately, & very much oblige...I will not affect to conceal that I am very solicitous for thy aid in it, & the discriminateing exercise of thy judgment. That aid to be acknowledged to the public, or not, at thy option..."
