BACKGROUND: as with the first Pitcairn Island stamp issue of 1940, the preparation of Norfolk Island's first stamps FDCs also continued for a week or two after the 10 JUNE 1947 day of issue, the date of the postmark being left unchanged until all orders were serviced.

This is evidenced by the various transit and arrival postmarks seen on other Registered FDCs. The island is approximately equidistant from the ports of Brisbane, Sydney, and Auckland, N.Z.

From Norfolk, Airmail covers were sent for distribution by SHIP to Australia (mostly arriving in Brisbane on 26 June, and Sydney on 27 June), where they connected to worldwide air services. Airmail FDCs were also taken by AIR by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), arriving in New Zealand around 20 June. Many of these FDCs have no receiving, transit or arrival postmarks on the reverse.

First Day Covers reached San Francisco on 2 July, New York on 3 and 5 July, Toronto (via Vancouver and Winnipeg) on 1 August, and Great Britain in July and August, 1947.

[Pitcairn's situation was slightly different, and caused by a lack of ships to collect mail/FDCs in WWII].

• The TEMPORARY REGISTERED MAIL LABEL on this cover (#444) was the THIRD Registered label used at Norfolk from Friday 6 June until Tuesday 10 June 1947, the first day of the new stamps.

(1) Australian label printed "NORFOLK ISLAND/NEW SOUTH WALES" in 2 lines; LAST USE Friday 6 June.

(2) same label as above, with "NEW SOUTH WALES" obliterated by blue pencil, leaving only the word "NORFOLK ISLAND" - used on 10 June for a short period, until that small supply was exhausted.

(3) was a blank label . A thin 24mm "NORFOLK ISLAND" upper-case stamp was manually applied into the blank space above the printed number (this cover #444). This label was quickly brought into use when Norfolk's remaining small stock of the two-line "NORFOLK ISLAND/NEW SOUTH WALES" labels was exhausted in servicing the first (earliest) group of FDCs of this issue.

NOTE: The Norfolk Post Office continued to use their supply of the "blank" registered mail labels until well after the release of Norfolk's second stamp issue on 6 June 1953.
