Large Antique Mettlach V&B Handpainted Wall Plate/Plaque #1044 Dec.93 Burghaus Kurbisch u. Castorkirche in Carden c.1900

Description: This beautiful wall plate/plaque was produced by Villeroy and Boch Mettlach in 1890s - early 1900s.

The plate is a part of a series of Mettlach plates depicting the Rhine castles. It was handpainted over transfer outline -all plate in this particular series were handpainted.

This one depicts a wonderful view of a medieval house in the town of Carden with the famous St.Castor Church in the background. St. Castor is a Romanesque former collegiate church in Carden (now it is speeled Karden) on the Moselle. The Roman Catholic parish church is also known as the " Moselle Cathedral" and is the most important church on the Moselle between Trier and Koblenz . A museum in the canons' building on the former cloister recalls the past of the place as well as the Celtic and late antique facilities on the Martberg. The first church documented on this site was built in Carolingian times at the latest : a three-aisled basilica with a semicircular, stilted apse over 25 meters long and almost 15 meters wide. The construction of the Romanesque choir with apse, flank towers and transept of today's church began in 1186 over its foundations . The nave, which was built a little later, however, already shows characteristics of the early Gothic . The first five storeys of the west tower were probably built earlier around 1120. The sixth storey with the bell storey set off by a cornice was built in 1699 and finished off with a French dome .

Marked with green Mettlach Mercury mark, mold number 1044 and decor number 93. The technique of producing and decorating this plate was patended by Mettlach in Germany and USA. A very significant amount of Mettlach wares was exported to the US - this plate is most likely was imported and sold in the US in 1890s - early 1900s.

The plate is in excellent condition. It is a larger than usual plaque measuring 14" in diameter - quite large and impressive.
