The History of the Liner

The Dominion Monarch (1939–1962) was a British passenger and refrigerated cargo liner. Its name was a reference to the Dominion of New Zealand. It remains the largest cargo liner with all first class accommodations on board and at that time was the most powerful in the World.

Built in England from 1937-39, she set a number of records for her size and power. She operated between Great Britain and New Zealand via Australia in civilian service 1938-40 and 1948-62 and was a troopship 1940-47. She spent half of 1962 in Seattle Harbor as a floating hotel for the Century 21 Expo and was later scrapped in Japan.

Eleanor, Lady Harrison, wife of Frederick Lewis, 1st Baron Essendon launched the ship on 27 July 1938. He sailed from England to Australia and New Zealand. In Tenerife, South Africa etc...

With the outbreak of the Second World War, it was armed and therefore became a troop transport and was able to transport almost 15,700 soldiers, but it also continued to transport food and equipment.

This liner has traveled around the world 3 times.

At the end of the war it was used to take German prisoners of war to Australia and also brought New Zealand troops home. Subsequently it once again became a civil liner and freight transport.

In 1962 it was rented by Mitsui as a floating hotel and entertainment center for the Century 21 exhibition. The exhibition ended in October, it was brought to Japan in Osaka where it was scrapped, the end of the history of this liner.

The history of the Sextant

Kelvin Hughes, is a UK company specializing in the design and manufacture of navigation and surveillance systems and a provider of navigation data to the commercial and government maritime market.

After several stages and different partners,  in 1899 Lord Kelvin resigned his university professorship and in 1900 became a director of the new private limited company, Kelvin & James White Ltd, which acquired the business of James White. At the same time, Lord Kelvin's nephew, James Thomson Bottomley FRSE (1845-1926), joined the company. The company manufactured binnacle compasses and deep-sea sounding machines, many of which were fitted to the large ships built on the Clyde side.

In 1913 Dr Bottomley became chairman of Kelvin & James White Ltd and the firm changed its name to Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd. Alfred Baird had been a compass expert with the firm since 1884. Kelvin, Bottomley and Baird Ltd manufactured marine navigation equipment such as 'Kelvite' ball compasses and sounders at the Kelvin Works, Hillington, Glasgow.

In 1934 Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd built an instrument factory in Basingstoke which would later become the site of Smiths Industries Aerospace.

This sextant was therefore manufactured by Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird in Glasgow and assigned to the Monarque Dominion liner. Which makes it quite rare, because there were very few sextants on board.
