DESCRIPTION:

This is an 1899 edition of R.R. McIan's celebrated and extremely rare, two-volume quarto work, THE CLANS OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS, with text by James Logan. Volume I of this major undertaking was first commissioned in 1845 by the Highland Society of London and was financed by private subscription (a list of the subscribers is included after the title pages); Volume II followed shortly afterwards. The work is famous for McIan’s vivid and romantic color paintings of of Scottish Highlanders dressed in their various clan tartans and accoutrements.

This 1899 edition includes the text and illustrations of BOTH original volumes under one cover, unabridged. Each clan featured in the original edition is represented here, accompanied by one of McIan's remarkable color plates. James Logan, a journalist from Aberdeen, who was at one time the Secretary of the Highland Society of London, was commissioned to write a short essay for each clan, briefly covering its history, location, armorial bearings and dress. Logan’s essays are also included in this book. This 1899 edition is a complete and faithful reproduction of the 1845 original. The book also features a lengthy subject index, a list of subscribers to the original 1845 edition, and more. Local advertising from Glasgow and Edinburgh appears at the endpapers.
