Claude Terrasse, born January 27, 1867 in L'Arbresle (Rhône)1 and died June 30, 1923 in Paris (16th arrondissement)2, is a French composer of operas and operettas. Biography Nicknamed the “prince of French operetta”, Claude Terrasse was considered in his time to be the true successor of Offenbach. Furthermore, like him, he was conductor at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Claude Terrasse is the son of a silk counter manager in Lyon3. At 13, Alexandre Luigini, the composer of the Egyptian Ballet, took him into his harmony class and made him study the cornet and piano. In 1882, he obtained a first prize in music theory at the Lyon Conservatory and joined the Grand Théâtre as a trumpet player. Two years later he was admitted to the Niedermeyer school in Paris where he prepared for his future profession as an organist3. He began as chapel master at the Abbé Roussel Orphanage in Auteuil. During his military service in Grenoble, he met the painter Pierre Bonnard. In 1890, he married his sister, Andrée Bonnard4. After a few years spent in Arcachon, he became the organist of the Church of the Sainte-Trinité in Paris until 1898. In the meantime, he set to music the piece Ubu roi by Alfred Jarry in 1896. He frequents the artistic circle around the magazines Mercure de France and Revue blanche. This circle participates in and nourishes the artistic world and the literary, theatrical and pictorial avant-garde of their time. In particular, he was very close to Stéphane Mallarmé, Erik Satie and Misia Sert. Several painters, including Bonnard and Auguste Renoir, painted portraits of Claude Terrasse, some of which are exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay and the MET in New York3. In January 1898, with his friend Franc-Nohain, he founded a puppet and puppet theater at 6 rue Ballu, in the workshop adjoining his apartment. On January 20, Ubu Roi was created as a puppet show. A commemorative plaque remembers this event. Then, his works enjoyed great success until the war of 1914-1918 after which musical fashion completely changed. A street bears his name in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. He is buried in the Montmartre cemetery.
